![]() ![]() In IO’s case, a full arsenal of rapid-fire lasers and two protective orbs makes the game realistically completable, although a loss of a life / weapons on the later levels will mean an uphill struggle thereafter for even the most skilful of gamers. In typical fashion, you must attack their weak spots in the face of relentless resistance to progress.Īs with many games of this type, the key to success is holding on to the best weapons for as long as possible. ![]() The excellently drawn end-of-level guardians are also worthy of a mention, starting with a mothership and going through the improbable foes of a skull, gun and foetus. The major additions to Levels 3 and 4 are the narrow gaps, which really ramp up the difficulty level. I particularly like the alien-type creatures that come at you in Level 2 after exploding out of eggs: in fact, that level is possibly the most satisfying in appearance and gameplay terms. There’s not a massive amount of variation between the levels, but at least some attempt has been made to keep things fresh. Those of you who stick with it (or resort to trainers) will discover that the action unfolds over four levels, which borrow heavily from Salamander and R-Type - unfortunately, originality is not IO’s strong point. However, from my point of view the all-round class of the game, manifest in the slick scrolling, responsive controls, pixel perfect collision detection and some amazing graphics, just about salves the pain of having to retry an early section for the umpteenth time. In fact, it’s debatable whether most gamers, be it through lack of patience or aptitude, will persevere with it.
